Why?
Why should we decolonise? That is a great question.
As we decolonise, we begin to re-write and expand what is possbile for humanity, on a local scale through to a global scale. I want to ask you this:
Would you like to see a world without racism? Without sexism? Without homophobia, transphobia, exploitation, and inequality?
If your answer to any of those was a yes, that is why. Without decolonising our subjects of study and outlook on life, we will not be able to see outside of the rigid binaries set for us by institutional power. There is a great deal of human suffering that is brought about due to a lack of equity. There is enough material resource for no human to suffer again, especially if we all co-operate.
When asking why we do not co-operate as of right now, it is because we are not thinking decolonially.
Why should we decolonise computer science though?
Because as a field of study, it has huge links to colonialism, resource extraction, profit acquisition, and capitalism.
If we want technology to be used in a safer and fairer way in society, we must ask ourselves what is means to decolonise computer science, and how we do that. I mean for Christ’s sake, we have racist and sexist A.I.s! Decolonising CS is imperative.
