How?

How do we decolonise? First and foremost, by getting educated

To make it possible to decolonise, we need to understand what we’re up against. Colonisation and capitalism are vast topics with deep nuances and real-world effects that impact us to this day. If we aren’t aware of these topics, then we’re already shooting ourselves in the feet.

With this knowledge, we must raise awareness and discuss it with those that are relevant to these conversations. From there, we must begin to organise ourselves in accordance with what we want to see achieved. Whether that is by organising a boycott, or a food-drive, we need our education to inform the real world actions we are to take.

Learn to live more sustainably and equitably. When was the last time you called your loved ones out on their racism? When was the last time you donated your time or money to a space that could use it? Material action is the key here.

For wide scale changes to occur, we, the people, need to have power.

Systematic change occurs when the people begin to hold power, and re-organise society in a fairer way. When we decolonise computer science, we must take a proactive approach and understand the reality of how our technology comes to exist day-by-day.

Whether its by removing bias as much as possible from A.I. models, through to developing software with society and people in mind, we can build up momentum toward a fairer world.
